How to Get to Zakopane
From Kraków Airport, Kraków city and Katowice Airport: private transfer, bus, rental car, taxi or train - how long each takes and who it suits.

Zakopane has no airport and no motorway of its own. Almost everyone arrives through Kraków, about 100 km to the north, and some visitors fly into Katowice. This guide compares the ways to cover the last stretch. Travel times are typical ranges, not promises: the road into the mountains is busy at weekends, on public holidays and in peak season.

Kraków Airport to Zakopane
Kraków Airport (KRK) is the most common gateway. The drive to Zakopane is roughly 110 km.
Private transfer
- Time: usually around 2 hours, longer in heavy traffic.
- Pros: door to door, no changes, the driver waits if your flight is late, child seats can be requested in advance.
- Cons: the most expensive option for one or two people.
- Families and large groups: the easiest choice. Minivans and minibuses carry larger groups together with their luggage.
- Luggage: tell the company how many suitcases, strollers and pairs of skis you have, so they send a vehicle that fits.

Rental car
- Time: around 2 hours in normal traffic.
- Pros: freedom for day trips and for reaching accommodation outside the centre.
- Cons: winter driving, weekend traffic and limited paid parking in the centre.

Bus
- Route: some operators run direct buses from the airport. Otherwise take the airport train to Kraków's main station (a short ride) and a bus from the bus station next to it.
- Time: about 2 to 2.5 hours from Kraków, plus the transfer from the airport.
- Pros: the cheapest option and frequent departures from Kraków.
- Cons: changes with luggage, standing room at busy times, and it ends at the bus station rather than your door.
- Families and large groups: possible with light luggage, tiring with small children and many bags.
Taxi
- Pros: available at the airport without booking.
- Cons: for a long trip like Zakopane, agree the price before you set off. A pre-booked transfer is usually simpler.
Train
- Route: airport train to Kraków's main station, then a direct train to Zakopane where one runs.
- Time: the fastest direct trains take about 2 hours, similar to the bus; slower services take longer.
- Pros: room for luggage, a toilet on board and a scenic final stretch.
- Cons: fewer departures than buses, and journey times differ a lot between trains.
Kraków city to Zakopane
If you are already staying in Kraków, the bus is the classic choice: frequent departures from the bus station beside the main railway station, about 2 to 2.5 hours. The train leaves from the main station; the fastest direct trains take about as long as the bus. A private transfer or a rental car picks you up at your hotel, which makes sense for families and groups with luggage.
Katowice Airport to Zakopane
Katowice Airport (KTW) is further away, roughly 200 km by road, and usually about 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car. Public transport means travelling first to Katowice or Kraków and then on to Zakopane, which makes a long day. For families and anyone with a lot of luggage, a private transfer or a rental car is the realistic option.
Arriving in Zakopane
The bus and train stations are next to each other, a short taxi ride or a walk from the centre. Many streets in town are steep and some are narrow, so if you are staying on a slope with heavy bags, a taxi from the station is worth it.
