Best Time to Visit Zakopane
There is no single best month. It depends on whether you want snow, hiking, a quiet stay, a family trip or the thermal baths.
Published
Every season in Zakopane has its good and bad sides. Winter brings snow and crowds, summer brings long days and afternoon storms, and the quietest weeks come with the most changeable weather. Instead of naming one best month, this guide starts from what you want out of your trip.

By what you want
Snow and skiing
Late December to March, with January and February the most reliable. Snow before Christmas is likely but not guaranteed. The trade-off: the Christmas and New Year period and the Polish school winter holidays (spread over January and February) are the busiest and most expensive weeks. Early March often has good snow with fewer people.
Hiking and mountain lakes
Late June to September. High trails are usually free of snow from around July. September is often the most settled month, with clear air and fewer storms. The trade-off: July and August are crowded, and afternoon thunderstorms mean early starts.
Families
It depends on the children's age. Summer offers the most to do outdoors and the longest days. Winter is ideal if the children want snow and sledging. With small children, May, June and September are gentler: fewer crowds, easier walks and more space at the thermal pools. More ideas in Zakopane with Kids.
Sightseeing and the town
Possible all year. May to June and September to October combine walkable weather with fewer crowds. Autumn colours in October are a highlight.
A quieter stay
April, May (outside long weekends), late September to October on weekdays, and November. Prices are often lower and the town is calmer. The trade-off: changeable weather, some mountain facilities close for maintenance between seasons, and November can be grey.
Thermal baths
Open all year, but best when it is cold outside: sitting in a warm outdoor pool with snow around you is the classic Zakopane experience. Evenings and weekdays are quieter.
By season
Winter (December to March)
- Good: snow, skiing, sledging, a festive atmosphere, thermal baths.
- Keep in mind: cold, short days, icy streets, high demand around the holidays; high mountain trails are for experienced winter hikers only.
Spring (April to June)
- Good: green valleys, quieter town, longer days.
- Keep in mind: snow lingers on high trails into late spring; weather changes quickly; long weekends at the start of May are busy.
Summer (July and August)
- Good: all trails open, the most activities, warm days.
- Keep in mind: the busiest time of the year, heavy traffic on the road from Kraków, rain and thunderstorms in the afternoons. If you come to escape the heat at home, it will feel refreshing - but pack a rain jacket.
Autumn (September to November)
- Good: stable weather in September, autumn colours in October, fewer people.
- Keep in mind: shorter days, first snow on the peaks, and grey, damp weeks in November.
